What is the effect of adding PE wax to the color masterbatch?

2023-09-11

What is the role of polyethylene wax in color masterbatches? Polyethylene wax plays a lubricating and dispersing role in the color master batch system, increasing compatibility with resins such as polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polypropylene, etc.

Adding to the color master batch system can increase the extrudability of the color master batch, improve production efficiency, and also increase the glossiness and processing performance of the product. Color masterbatch is a pigment concentrate based on resin as a carrier. Pigments exist in three states: primary particles, agglomerates, and aggregates. The dispersion mechanism of pigments is the process of breaking the agglomerate particles into agglomerates and primary particles, and stabilizing the generated particles.

The resin melt has high viscosity and poor compatibility with the surface of the pigment, resulting in poor wettability and difficulty in penetrating into the pores of the aggregates. Therefore, it cannot transmit shear force better and is difficult to break the aggregates well. Even after the aggregate is broken, the resin melt cannot quickly wet and protect the surface, and mutual collision and contact will cause particles to recombine. To solve this problem, an appropriate amount of polyethylene wax can be added to the above system.

Advantages of polyethylene wax application in color masterbatches:

(1) Higher thermal stability pe wax has good thermal stability because if the wax material is vaporized, it will have a negative impact on the color masterbatch and products. Some substances at any point, such as paraffin, lose 10% of weight in 4 minutes after thermal weight loss test at 200 ℃, and lose more than 20% in 10 minutes. Therefore, some cheap polyethylene will add low molecular weight substances such as paraffin, It will have a certain impact on the quality of color masterbatch and subsequent product processing.

(2) Through dispersion tests of polyethylene wax with different molecular weights, the ability of wax to separate pigments gradually increases with the increase of molecular weight. For the production process of color masterbatch, choosing polyethylene wax with a molecular weight of 3000 is more suitable.

(3) Narrow molecular weight distribution has a certain impact on the dispersion performance of polyethylene wax, and wax with narrow molecular weight distribution has better dispersion performance compared to wax with wide molecular weight distribution.

Polyethylene wax has good compatibility with pigments, is easy to wet pigments, and can penetrate into the internal pores of pigment aggregates, weaken cohesion, and make pigment aggregates more easily broken under external shear force. Newly generated particles can also be quickly wetted and protected, making it a dispersant for various thermoplastic resin color masterbatches and a lubricating dispersant for filling and degrading masterbatches. In addition, polyethylene wax can also reduce the viscosity of the system and improve flowability. Therefore, adding polyethylene wax during the production of color masterbatch can improve production efficiency and yield, and stabilize the dispersion effect.
