Coupling agent  is an important and widely used treatment agent, which is mainly used as auxiliary agent for polymer composites. The biggest characteristic of the molecular structure of the coupling agent is that the molecule contains two groups with different chemical properties. One is a group that is hydrophilic to inorganic substances, which is easy to react with the surface of inorganic substances; The other is an organophilic group, which can react with synthetic resins or other polymers or form hydrogen bonds to be dissolved therein. Therefore, the coupling agent is called "molecular bridge", which is used to improve the interface between inorganic and organic materials, so as to greatly improve the performance of composite materials. There are many kinds of coupling agents, including silane coupling agent, titanate coupling agent, aluminate coupling agent, bimetallic coupling agent, phosphate ester coupling agent, etc. In this article today, Sainuo  will focus on the related knowledge of aluminate coupling agents.

Aluminate coupling agent is a new type of coupling agent developed by Fujian Normal University. Its structure is similar to that of titanate coupling agent. There are two active groups in the molecule. One can interact with the surface of inorganic fillers; The other kind can entangle with resin molecules, thereby generating coupling between inorganic filler and matrix resin.

Aluminate coupling agent is comparable to titanate coupling agent in improving physical properties of products, such as improving impact strength and thermal deformation temperature; Its cost is low, the price is only half of that of titanate coupling agent, and it has the characteristics of light color, non-toxic and easy to use. Its thermal stability is better than that of titanate coupling agent.

1. Performance characteristics

(1) Compared with other coupling agents (such as titanate, boric acid ester, etc.), the inorganic powder activated and modified by aluminate coupling agent has not only stable quality, but also light color, non-toxic, small taste, synergistic thermal stability and lubricity to PVC. It has a wide range of application, no diluent, convenient use and low price.

(2) Various inorganic powders activated and modified by aluminate coupling agent generate an organic molecular layer due to chemical or physicochemical action on their surface, and change from hydrophilic to organic. It has been proved that the surface of inorganic powder modified by aluminate coupling agent can be used in composite products, and the inorganic friendly end and organic friendly end of the coupling agent can respectively react with the surface of inorganic filler and organic resin or form entanglement structure, which enhances the interface compatibility between inorganic powder and organic resin. Therefore, modification with aluminate coupling agent can not only improve the processing performance of plastic products filled with inorganic powder, It can also significantly improve the physical and mechanical properties of the products, so that the water absorption of the products is reduced, the oil absorption is reduced, and the filler is evenly dispersed. For some low filled plastic products, generally, the filler amount can be greatly increased (twice or more than twice the original filling amount), the processing performance can be improved (the melt viscosity is reduced, and the mold wear is reduced), the product quality can be improved, and the production cost can be reduced. Therefore, it has obvious economic benefits.

(3) In the process of grinding pigments (fillers) for producing pigments and inks, metered coupling agents can be directly added to improve the dispersion of pigments (fillers), shorten the grinding time, improve the fineness, brightness and reduce the viscosity.

(4) The coupling agent used in the rubber industry can improve the wear resistance and aging resistance of tires, rubber plates, rubber tubes, rubber shoes and other products, and reduce the amount of NR, thus reducing the cost.

2. Scope of application

It is suitable for surface activation modification of various inorganic fillers (such as calcium carbonate, wollastonite powder, talc powder, kaolin, bentonite, gypsum powder, aluminum oxide, etc.), inorganic flame retardants (such as magnesium hydroxide, aluminum hydroxide, zinc borate, brocade trioxide, etc.) and pigments (such as iron oxide red, lithopone, titanium dioxide powder, zinc oxide, lithopone, etc.). The modified fillers, flame retardants and pigments can be applied to composite products such as plastics, rubber, coatings, inks, laminated products and adhesives.

3. Addition amount

The dosage of coupling agent is generally about 0.5-2.5% of the filler, and the recommended dosage is 1%. (the finer the particle size of the pigment and filler, the larger the surface area, and the larger the amount of coupling agent.)
