What are the applications of EVA wax (hot melt adhesive)?


EVA Wax  (hot melt adhesive) is widely applicable, such as PA (polypropylene), PA (polyethylene) and other non-polar materials, which can also achieve good bonding effect. Due to the poor rigidity of EVA wax (hot melt adhesive), its softening point is lower than that of polyester and polyamide hot melt adhesives, and its global softening point is about 100 ℃, which limits its application range.

EVA wax (hot melt adhesive) is composed of EVA resin, tackifying resin, wax and stabilizer.

EVA resin introduces a short branched chain composed of polar acetic acid gene into the ethylene branched chain, which disrupts the original crystalline state, causes EVA to tend to "plasticizing effect", reduces the crystallinity of ethylene on the branched chain, increases the distance between polymer chains, and makes EVA resin more flexible and elastic.

The VA content in EVA resin can range from low to high percentage. Therefore, the percentage content of VA and  MI (melt index, reflecting the molecular weight) in the resin are the most important factors that directly determine and affect the properties of EVA.

Generally, the EVA content is high, the adhesive force increases, the wettability to the bonded material is good, the curing time is slow, and the heat resistance decreases. The high melt index indicates that the molecular weight is low, the viscosity of the colloid decreases, the wettability is good, the heat resistance decreases, and the adhesive force remains unchanged.

Compared with EEA (ethylene ethyl acrylate), EAA (ethylene propylene ester) and EMA (methacrylate ethyl ester), EVA in ethylene based copolymer has higher breaking tensile strength, which varies with the content of VA.

The tensile strength of the yield point of EVA wax decreases with the increase of VA content, and becomes very small when the VA content is more than 25%.

The bending rigidity of EVA is equal to that of soft PVC, which decreases with the increase of VA, while Mi increases and the bending rigidity decreases.

EVA resin has good compatibility. It can be mixed with other resins to improve physical properties. For example, EVA resin is blended with nitric acid fiber, so that the nitric acid fiber has excellent flexibility, friction resistance and heat bonding.

The rigid PVC is mixed with 5% ~ 10% EVA, which improves the fluidity and impact resistance. EVA is blended into polyamide resin to develop good bending resistance and colorability at low temperature.

Tackifying resins include rosin, rosin ester, polyterpene resin, low molecular weight polystyrene and C5 and C9 olefin resins. The selection of tackifying resin should pay attention to its thermal stability. Generally, olefin resin is better than rosin derivative. But rosin derivatives can provide better adhesion.

The commonly used waxes are paraffin, microcrystalline wax, synthetic wax, low molecular weight polyethylene, etc. In EVA wax, the role of wax is to reduce viscosity, improve wettability, reduce curing time and reduce cost. But it causes brittleness and reduces adhesion. The dosage of microcrystalline wax in the formula should be careful, and the influence of microcrystalline wax on the adhesive force of glue is the smallest compared with other waxes.

Synthetic wax is better than microcrystalline wax and paraffin wax in improving the heat resistance of glue and reducing the cost of glue.
