Wax powder is often used in powder coatings, but there are many general categories in the market. Sometimes, customers will face some difficulties in selecting. Polyethylene wax is widely used. Because it is cheap and can meet common performance requirements, almost every customer has used it. Polyethylene wax is widely used. For example, in plastics, printing ink, PVC profiles and other industries, the amount of powder coating actually accounts for a small proportion in the entire application market.

 

This is a problem. Some varieties may be suitable for the plastic industry, but not for the powder industry. After all, everyone's process and requirements are different. It is necessary for us to simply understand the process indicators of polyethylene wax.

First, its raw material is mainly high molecular weight polyethylene, and then some other auxiliary materials are added.

At present, there are three main production methods of polyethylene wax:

First is polyethylene wax synthesized by ethylene monomer through oligomerization, such as free radical oligomerization;

The second is polyethylene wax formed by degradation of polymer;

The third is the purification of by-products in the synthesis process. For example, polyethylene wax is obtained from the separation of by-products in the high-pressure polyethylene synthesis process.

1. Ethylene polymerization

The molecular weight distribution of polyethylene wax produced by this polymerization method is narrow, and the molecular weight can also be controlled artificially. However, the investment in production equipment is too large, and the investment in capital is too large. 

2. Polyethylene cracking method

The raw material of this method can be polyethylene resin or polyethylene waste plastics. High molecular weight polyethylene can be decomposed into low molecular weight polyethylene wax under the condition of isolating air. Then the performance indexes of the polyethylene wax are affected by the cracking feedstock. 

The methods of cracking are divided into cracking kettle method and extrusion method. The cracking kettle method belongs to batch production with low productivity. Extrusion process is a continuous process with large production capacity.

3. Polyethylene by-product purification

The relative molecular weight of this by-product polyethylene wax product is relatively low, about 1000, and its performance is lower than that of the product produced by polymerization. In addition, there is the modification of functionalized polyethylene wax. Polyethylene wax belongs to non-polar molecules. Inserting polar groups on these molecules will expand many application fields to meet the requirements of different applications.

Next, let's talk about the performance indicators of polyethylene wax.

In the powder industry, under the current environmental protection policy, the top priority of wax powder should be whether it will smoke after baking. Our current customers, taking our polyethylene wax, do the first step of the experiment is to see if it smokes. These can be tested by some means. In addition, it depends on its softening point, which determines the final effect of polyethylene wax, especially its hardness, scratch resistance and smoothness.

The general softening point should be around 105-110. At the same time, the molecular weight also determines the final effect. Generally, the molecular weight is about 1000-5000. We are most familiar with the properties of polyethylene wax, such as hardness and scratch resistance. In fact, it has other effects. For example, it can also affect the dispersion of pigments. Even after adding polyethylene wax, the output of extrusion will also be improved, because the addition of polyethylene wax powder will reduce the torque of the screw. Theoretically, it will improve the output to a certain extent.

Because the wax powder is transferred to the coating surface, it can also play an active role in the waterproof. Of course, the amount of wax powder should also be controlled. When the amount is too large, it will also affect the surface clarity, gloss and adhesion between layers.
