PVC external lubricant: difference between Fischer Tropsch wax and PE wax

Fischer Tropsch wax is mainly composed of linear and saturated high-carbon alkanes with relative molecular weight of 500-1000, which gives this chemical fine crystal structure, high melting point, narrow melting point range, low oil content, low penetration, low mobility, low melting viscosity, hardness, wear resistance and high stability.

Compared with general polyethylene wax, the significant difference between Fischer Tropsch synthetic wax and general polyethylene wax lies in:

(1) molecular weight. The molecular weight of Fischer Tropsch wax is much lower than that of PE wax, with less branched chains and high crystallinity. It is easy to penetrate into the high viscosity macromolecular chain, significantly reduce the melt viscosity, have small mobility in the processing process and obvious lubrication effect in the later stage.


(2) Fischer Tropsch wax is saturated direct alkane, without double bond, with strong antioxidant capacity and good weather resistance.


⑶ the viscosity of Fischer Tropsch wax is much lower than that of PE wax. Only about 10. The same lubrication effect can be achieved with less dosage. The use amount is only 70-80% of PE wax. Fischer Tropsch wax has good compatibility with PVC and can be used as internal and external lubricant. It can be used as a good internal lubricant to effectively control shear conditions, promote flow, control friction and melting properties, so as to improve thermal stability. At the same time, due to its high crystallinity and high linearity structure, Fischer Tropsch wax makes PVC products obtain the best physical and processing properties. According to the needs, the Fischer Tropsch process can synthesize alkanes with different chain lengths, change the molecular weight of the final product and form a series of products.

Main action mechanism of external lubricant

Generally, the external lubricant of PVC is high melting point wax with non polarity or low polarity, the relatively high melting point of 50-200 ℃, and relatively large molecular weight. 

The action mechanism is to use its incompatibility to form a lubricating layer outside the surface of PVC melt or flow unit to improve the friction between the surface of flow unit and the surface of melt and metal. It is easy to precipitate at high temperature, but not at room temperature. 

During the mixing process, it is mainly in the later stage of mixing. After the resin particles are basically broken, they just melt and wrap on the particle surface to avoid the secondary agglomeration of fine powder.


At the initial stage of extrusion, when the resin particles slide and rub with each other, the melting point of external lubrication is high, there is no melting, and the plasticization is not delayed. When the melt temperature rises in the middle and later stages of processing, the melted external lubricant is covered between the melts to appropriately delay the plasticization and improve the adhesion with the metal, so as to prevent the melt from over plasticization and provide better demoulding.


PE wax judgment method: One look, two touch, three smell, four boiling, five melting, six measuring, seven test.

▶Look: flake wax. Genuine flake wax is plastic at first sight. It is no different from plastic sheet. The surface is smooth, translucent, natural white or yellowish. When broken apart, the layer is not layered, and there are no impurities such as lime powder and black spots. One side reflects light and has good brightness;

Touch: the real product has good smoothness. It feels like plastic rather than paraffin. It is hard, brittle and fragile. It is not agglomerated at room temperature. Fakes containing paraffin are greasy, greasy to the touch, feel like candles, or rough. They look like uncoordinated dough. They are soft. If you hold them with your hand, they will become a ball;

Smell: the genuine product smells like plastic, and the fake product smells like paraffin or strong odor;

Boiling: heat the wax flake in a glassware until the water boils for 5 minutes. The shape of the wax flake remains unchanged and it is genuine. If it becomes paste or deformed, it contains impurities such as paraffin

Melting: take a small amount of wax sample, put it on the filter screen with more than 80 mesh, and put the filter screen at the front end of the heating ring of the extruder at a temperature higher than 120 ℃. 1. If it is found to melt immediately, it should contain low melting point substances such as paraffin and stearic acid. 2. If the solution turns white and opaque after melting, or there is white insoluble matter on the mesh, it indicates that the wax contains impurities such as calcium carbonate and starch. 3. If there are other impurities on the mesh, the wax is too dirty and easy to block the mesh. 4. If there are no impurities, the solution is fresh and transparent with the same color, but it melts early, and all the liquid leaks under the mesh without residue. It can be basically identified as normal special wax.

Measuring: measuring melting range, softening point, acid value, ash content, etc;

Test: make a small sample or pilot test in the actual production to see the effect and product quality.
