Performance advantages of polyethylene wax in color masterbatch processing

In the field of color masterbatch production, adding polyethylene wax can improve the fluidity of polymer material system. By improving the wettability and dispersion of pigments and other additives, and then improving the processing performance to varying degrees, it is conducive to improve the production efficiency, and the surface gloss of extruded products is good.

(1) The variety selection of pe wax in the color masterbatch formula needs to consider both the pigment and carrier resin in the color masterbatch, as well as the resin to be colored by the color masterbatch. This is because according to the principle of similarity and compatibility, homopolyethylene wax is suitable for nonpolar plastics, such as polyethylene and polypropylene, while copolymerized polyethylene wax molecules are connected with polar groups, carboxyl groups are introduced, and esterification and other modifications are carried out today. Therefore, homopolyethylene wax is suitable for polar PVC, polystyrene, ABS and engineering plastics. The selected polyethylene wax can be mixed and dispersed with each other only if it has good compatibility with the carrier resin. Similarly, the variety selection of polyethylene wax is also suitable for the polarity matching of various pigments.

(2) Polyethylene wax has wetting and dispersing functions in the processing of color masterbatch. An ideal wetting dispersant has relatively low viscosity in the wetting treatment stage (relatively low temperature) of pigment particles, which is conducive to the wetting of pigment particles; In the shear dispersion stage (relatively high temperature), the viscosity is expected to be higher, which will obviously help the shear dispersion. However, when the pigment is dispersed in plastic, it is mainly shear force, and the viscosity is too low, which is not conducive to dispersion. In the conventional processing, increasing the temperature of the dispersion system is conducive to the wetting and penetration of pigment particles; While decreasing the temperature is more conducive to the shear dispersion of pigment particles. How to find the processing conditions and methods that are not only conducive to the wetting of pigment particles, but also can effectively disperse them must be seriously considered and treated. Therefore, we need to comprehensively and systematically consider and select the appropriate variety of polyethylene wax.

(3) The selection of polyethylene wax needs to consider factors such as environment and product safety. Wax products with low molecular weight will increase volatility and cause environmental pollution and product odor. If such wax is used in some sensitive application fields, such as food packaging materials and children's toys, it will cause very serious adverse consequences. Therefore, we must be cautious in the selection of such a major auxiliary material.

(4) Choose different kinds of polyethylene wax from the needs of end customers. If the color masterbatch is used in low-end applications, such as garbage bags, garbage cans, mulching films, etc., customers can choose by-product wax or pyrolysis wax. If the color masterbatch is used in mid-range applications and has the requirements of dispersion and taste, synthetic polyethylene wax should be selected. If the color masterbatch is used for special applications with harsh taste and heat resistance, Ziegler Natta or metallocene polymerized polyethylene wax should be selected.
