In the current coating industry, zinc stearate is used as a polishing agent based on its incompatibility with coating components. It is dispersed in the coating as a very fine suspended substance, which is distributed on the surface of the coating film during film formation, resulting in micro roughness on the surface of the coating film. Zinc stearate is the least soluble of the five common stearate salts, with superior transparency, dispersibility, adhesion, weather resistance, and storage properties.

There are several technical indicators that affect the performance of zinc stearate in wood primer:

1. Polishing performance

In wood primer, polishing performance is a very important indicator in paint. The usual test method is to use the same coating formula and spray board polishing test at the same time, without a fixed standard. If only one coating manufacturer has used zinc stearate, it does not matter whether the polishing performance is good or bad. However, market competition has led to product comparison and also stimulated the further development of zinc stearate grinding aids. The quality of polishing performance directly affects the speed of construction and the frequency of sandpaper replacement, thereby directly affecting the cost of furniture manufacturers.

2. Transparency

In transparent primer, the quality of transparency directly affects the aesthetic level of the wood. Therefore, zinc stearate produced by water method cannot be used in transparent wood paint, mainly because there are too many impurities. The purity of zinc stearate produced by direct method can meet the requirements, but the process requirements are also very high. Different production processes have a significant impact on transparency, and it is possible that small differences in process may lead to significant differences in transparency. Therefore, although there are many manufacturers that produce zinc stearate directly, there are not many that can be used in the coating industry. This is also the core technology of coating zinc stearate enterprises. 

The usual detection method for transparency is to use a certain proportion of resin, solvent, and zinc stearate dispersion, with one test sample and one standard sample each. Then, use a coating machine to apply a layer of film on black and white paper or glass to see the degree of transparency.
