Application of polyethylene wax in plastic processing

Polyethylene wax is low molecular weight polyethylene, which is widely used because of its excellent properties. This paper briefly introduces the application of pe wax as masterbatch dispersant and plastic processing lubricant in plastic processing.

1. As dispersant of Color Masterbatch

With the increasing development of the plastic industry, the plastic processing industry increasingly tends to use various functional masterbatches with convenient operation to reduce the cost of raw materials and process costs, improve production efficiency and endow plastic products with different properties, so as to meet the different needs of the market.

Polyethylene wax can be used as dispersant of color masterbatch of various thermoplastic resins and lubricating dispersant of filling masterbatch and degradation masterbatch. Polyethylene wax has good compatibility with plastics, good heat resistance, good mixing and easy crushing, does not affect the performance of terminal products, and plays a role in wetting, dispersing and stabilizing filler or pigment particles. Studies have shown that the polymerized polyethylene wax is better than the cracked polyethylene wax in terms of both the dispersion ability and thermal stability of filler and pigment particles. Therefore, polymerized polyethylene wax is mostly used in high-end masterbatch products.

2. Plastic processing lubricant

The lubricant used in plastic processing is to improve the fluidity and demoulding of plastics, especially thermoplastics, during processing and molding. The main function of lubricant is to reduce the mutual friction between plastic materials and processing machinery and between plastic materials and internal molecules in the processing process, so as to improve the processing performance of plastics and improve the performance of products. The viscosity of polyethylene wax is much lower than that of plastic melt. It can be used as plastic melt index modifier. Because of its good thermal stability, low volatility at high temperature and good dispersion, it can improve the fluidity of plastic processing and improve the processing performance of plastic.

According to the action mechanism of lubricants in plastic processing and molding, lubricants are divided into internal lubricants and external lubricants. The internal lubricant has a certain affinity with the polymer, and its lubrication function is mainly to reduce the interaction and friction between polymer molecules, or reduce the force between polar polymer molecules. External lubricant mainly reduces the friction between polymer and processing machinery, which can improve long-term operability, dimensional stability, prevent scaling and increase production capacity. There are many kinds of lubricants. Most lubricants have both internal and external lubrication functions. The one with strong lubrication function is called external lubricant and the one with strong internal lubrication function is called internal lubricant. Lubricants are widely used. Some lubricants are used in the processing of rigid PVC, polyolefin, polystyrene, ABS, phenolic resin, trimeric amine resin, cellulose acetate, unsaturated polyester, polyamide and rubber. However, the main use of lubricant is still in hard PVC, so people often focus on hard PVC when evaluating the performance of lubricant.

(1) PVC lubricant

PVC resin has excellent physical properties and can be made into rigid and flexible products. The process includes extrusion, coating, injection, blow molding, calendering, etc. Products include pipes, profiles, sheets, hollow products, wire and cable sheaths, etc. PVC resin has poor thermal stability, so heat stabilizer and lubricant need to be added during processing and molding. The lubricant can prevent the resin from staying inside the extruder or causing resin decomposition due to local overheating, and make the resin easy to form. PVC plastic profiles are widely used as indoor decoration profiles, building water supply and drainage pipes and plastic steel doors and windows. Plastic profile is made of PVC and more than ten kinds of plastic additives through blending modification and extrusion, and lubricant is an important additive.

Polyethylene wax and oxidized polyethylene wax are mainly used for external lubrication, with strong external lubrication. They also have good lubricity in the middle and later stages of molding processing. They can be regarded as lubricants in the middle and later stages, and are suitable for producing products with complex sections. It can be used in lead salt stabilization system, non-toxic calcium and zinc composite stabilization system and rare earth composite stabilization system. For example, Sainuo's 3316 is an excellent external lubricant, which is applied to various types of PVC processing processes. Especially in PVC calendering and extrusion processes, it can significantly improve the plasticization of PVC and improve the mechanical strength of products; It is used for processing high-temperature hard materials and has outstanding anti viscosity and anti scorching properties. The oxidized polyuethylene wax 629 is mainly used as an external lubricant for hard and soft PVC processing. It can increase torque, reduce the precipitation of organotin and lead salt stable system, and has extremely high external lubrication and demoulding effect. It does not affect the Vicat thermal change temperature and impact resistance of products.

(2) Lubricants for other plastics

The molecular structure of polyethylene wax is similar to that of polyolefin, with weak polarity and high compatibility. It plays an internal lubrication role in the processing of polyolefin plastics. The modified polyethylene wax has high polarity and low compatibility with polyolefins, so it plays an external lubricating role. Polyethylene wax can significantly improve the fluidity of materials in the extruder and the demoulding of finished products. At the same time, the finished product shows better surface properties, longer-term stability and more attractive colors.

Polystyrene has benzene ring in styrene, and the proportion is also large. Compared with polyethylene, polystyrene has greater polarity, has certain compatibility with internal and external lubricants, and the formula elasticity is better. Amidated polyethylene wax is often used as internal lubricant in PS production to improve demoulding and can be added before polymerization.

Lubricants and release agents are needed in the production and processing of thermosetting plastics. The use of compatible internal lubricants can improve the fluidity, while external lubricants can reduce the adhesion between materials and hot machine parts, so as to improve the demoulding effect. Polyethylene wax combines with internal lubricant with strong demoulding effect, providing a larger allowable range of operation.

In polyamide processing, polyethylene wax is used as dispersant, which can evenly distribute reinforcing materials and pigments in polyamide. In the injection molding of polyamide, the difficulty of demoulding depends on the crystallinity and the effect of lubricant. Generally, modified polyethylene wax is used as lubricant. In the injection molding of linear polyester (PET), polyethylene wax plays an important role in improving the demoulding and fluidity of filled pet. Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) is very viscous just after processing, and the use of polyethylene wax can give a very good demoulding effect.

New engineering plastics are often difficult to process. Some plastics are very viscous soon after processing, and some have very high molecular weight, so their fluidity is very poor. In the processing of these plastics, polyethylene wax is a very important processing aid because of its low volatility, internal and external lubrication, demoulding and anti migration in polar and non-polar plastics.
